Er, to be more clear, that should be "the boxes _emacs_ displays are generally the correct width...". Another idea is to display the bottom byte of the character code as hex in the box. Maybe two hex digits can fit if they are small, and the user would sometimes be able to identify the character from those. Another idea is to display in the box a slightly smaller version of the character which the bottom byte represents.
