I wrote ftx backend before writing xft backend because the
documentation of Xft library was poor (even now so) and it
was easier to debug the font-backend mechanism with ftx
backend (because it directly uses freetype).

I don't know how many systems have X but not Xft, but if
there exists such a system, ftx backend is still necessary.
