I see.  But I can't reproduce that bug.  I tried this:

(1) Open two xterm windows, (a) and (b).

(2) In (a), run emacs with "-nw", and execute M-x
    server-start RET.

(3) In (b), run emacsclient, with and without DISPLAY
    setting, and both work well (the former creates a new
    window frame, and the latter creates a new tty frame).

I suspect something is wrong with multi-tty patch.
