I am in favor of the idea, generally speaking. Emacs ought to have only one such mode, which does all the things users want. The people who implemented Message mode ought to have spoken with me about what they found inadequate in Mail mode, so we could work out a way to improve Mail mode. But they did not discuss this with me; I found out about it only after the fact. We cannot change the past, but we can head in the right direction in the future.
