When starting Emacs after the compile today I got this message:
Warning (initialization): Building Emacs overflowed pure space. (See the node \
Pure Storage in the Lisp manual for details.)
I have never seen this before, what has happened?

After a `cvs update' on Sunday morning, I got the same thing. I increased
the amount of memory (by 605500 bytes) allocated in `src/puresize.h' and
did `make clean; make bootstrap' and everything was fine.
I'm guessing that Emacs needs more memory because more files are
being loaded upon initialization (?).

Thanks, I will try that.
Is this something I need to do each time I compile Emacs or will it be
taken care of centrally? I am quite lost when it comes to compiling
programs besides the normal "./configure; make; make install".

As long as a cvs up doesn't indicate any conflicts (afaik
via a 'C' at the beginning of the updating message) your
change to puresize.h is successfully merged.
If there is a conflict it's very likely someone changed
exactly the line you changed. Either resolve it manually or
simply delete puresize.h and check it out again (and hope
this change fixed your problem).

Nothing in the changelogs seems to indicate that additional files are
being preloaded. But several _changes_ to files that are preloaded
are constantly being made, increasing pure-bytes-used constantly.
What used to be done is that each time there was a pure space
overflow, BASE_PURESIZE got increased by 10000. This yielded pure
space overflows every couple of months or so. Now apparently
whenever there is a pure space overflow, BASE_PURESIZE gets
increased by 500. This means that there will be a new pure space
overflow anywhere from a few minutes to a few days later.
Different people get somewhat different values of pure-bytes-used.
Eli was wondering that this could be caused by some bug. I must
confess that I do not fully understand the problems (if any) involved,
but somebody suggested that the differences could be due to the way
you compile Emacs. This may make a difference as to whether and when
cl.el gets loaded during compiling. cl.el redefines some often used
functions, making their code longer. This would seem consistent with
the fact that people doing `make bootstrap' seem to get a slightly
higher value than Eli, who I believe does not usually do `make bootstrap'.
Incrementing BASE_PURESIZE by increments of 500 forces people like me
who have a routinely a few tiny uncommitted change to the Emacs source
code to set SITELOAD_PURESIZE_EXTRA to some reasonable value, say 10000.
I suggest to go back to increasing BASE_PURESIZE by increments of 10000.
Any lesser value just will result in too frequent problems.

I should have been more precise here. cl.el redefines some often used
_macros_ which get inlined when compiled. So this increases the pure
space used in all compiled versions of files that use those macros.
The difference in pure-bytes-used indeed only seems to occur in
compiled files.

No, this cannot explain the differences I was trying to investigate,
because I made a point, as part of my testing, of building Emacs both
with and without bootstrap. I got the same numbers in both cases.

I don't think it's reasonable at this stage. We are not supposed to
install changes that increase the pure size significantly; adding 10K
will just risk wasting memory in the released Emacs.

I'm not sure what size other people get, but my `emacs' binary is never
smaller than 2MB (by a long shot), so even if one counts the worst case
20KB of wasted space (10KB * 2 (64bit growth factor)), it's still less than
1%. Not much to worry about. If we really care about that kind of memory,
we can do as XEmacs did: dump once to see how much pure space is necessary,
than adjust pure size and redump.
I use here a local hack which saves more pure space than that by simply
using a more compact representation for strings. I haven't installed it
because I'm not convinced it's worth the trouble (it's more interesting on
64bit systems, tho). See patch hunk below to get a feel for it ;-)

Maybe I'm not completely following the related threads, but at least
one can see such a difference as follows:
$ make bootstrap

I observed that .elc's compiled by bootstrap-emacs have `dolist'
expanded by cl.el, whereas those compiled by emacs have
subr.el-version. Actually, bootstrap-emacs loads cl.el via preloaded
.el files that contain (eval-when-compile (require 'cl)), where
`eval-when-compile' just behaves like `progn'.

For what it's worth, I have been using the following recipe (taken
from INSTALL.CVS, is it still valid advice?) for updating Emacs. After
cvs update
I do:
% gmake
% cd lisp
% gmake recompile EMACS=../src/emacs
% cd ..
% gmake
I have noticed that the amount of pure storage needed in the initial
call to gmake is different from the one needed after recompile.
(sparc-sun-solaris2.7, X toolkit). Is this to be expected?
Specifically, the last build I tried (Jul 4) required 1210824 pure
bytes in second iteration and 1208688 in the first (so the latest
increase does not suffice).

Also building Emacs failed with `make bootstrap' in the Fedora
Core 5 system. Today I got:
Dumping under names emacs and emacs-22.0.50.1
emacs:0:Pure Lisp storage overflow (approx. 1211144 bytes needed)
144 pure bytes used
Despite that it didn't happen with the Solaris 2.6 system:
Dumping under names emacs and emacs-22.0.50.1
1210896 pure bytes used
I don't use GTK. The value of `system-configuration-options' is:
"'--verbose' '--without-xim'"

We've been through this: memory waste is not measured in percents in
my book, it's measured in bytes.

Yes, I've read it. But note that even those messages talk about a
small discrepancy (1300 to 2200 bytes), whereas the differences I was
looking into were much larger.

I should have been more precise here. cl.el redefines some often used
_macros_ which get inlined when compiled. So this increases the pure
space used in all compiled versions of files that use those macros.
I don't quite follow. Why does the redefinition made by cl.el
alter the size of the expansion of these macro calls?
Can you give an example case where that occurs?

The major difference seems to come from the length of the uninterned
symbol name that is allocated for each expanded `dolist'.

takes 2 units in 8(== (1 << GCTYPEBITS))-byte block including the

Here's the result of some experiments:
Dumped with dolist in subr.el: 1209808 bytes used
dolist in cl.el: >1211000 bytes used (overflow)
dolist in cl.el with the modification
'--cl-dolist-temp-- -> '--dolist-temp-- :

Does it make sense to allocate Lisp objects (with alignment)
forward from the beginning and non-Lisp objects (without
alignment) backward from the end in the pure storage? If the
following patch correct, pure-bytes-used decreases by ~70KB.

Interesting. I'm wondering why you say "multiple of 8", since the pointer
to the data part of a string is not a Lisp_Object but a plain pointer
without any special alignment constraint AFAIK.
Also `make-symbol' allocates a fixed amount of memory AFAIK, independent
from the symbol name's length (it keeps a ref to the string argument,
instead, so that (eq X (symbol-name (make-symbol X))) is always true), and
the "--cl-dolist-temp--" string should only be allocated once (when reading
the macro definition). So the only explanation that I can find is that the
uninterned symbol names get copied to purespace at some point (don't know
when or why), at which point the single shared string "--cl-dolist-temp--"
gets copied N times.

I thought the whole point of using make-symbol was to create an
anonymous loop-var to prevent BODY from accessing/modifying the list.
Besides, if the CL version is correct, why cannot the subr version of
dolist do the same?

Symbols are not copied to pure space at all.
This is because their slots are not constant.
However, make_symbol copies uninterned symbol names to pure space.
Since the existing dolist macro generates a new symbol each time,
these symbols share nothing in the compiled output; they are different
uninterned symbols whose names happen to be the same. So lread.c
copies the name to pure space each time.

It is (cdr ,temp), referring to the uninterned symbol.
The body cannot refer to that uninterned symbol (that's the whole
point of using one). So it is safe to take the cdr at the end.

Indeed. That's why the setq can be moved. But the `cdr' is applied to
a cons-cell, not to the anonymous variable, and the cons-cell is
not anonymous.

Then maybe it can. I was just pointing out that it can change the behavior
in the case where the loop body changes the list destructively as it goes
through it.

IMO, we better make them consistent.
As you point out, it is not safe to move the `cdr' if BODY modifies
the list. But we could just document this fact in the docstring, e.g.:
dolist is a Lisp macro in `subr.el'.
(dolist (var list [result]) body...)
Loop over a list.
Evaluate BODY with VAR bound to each car from LIST, in turn.
Then evaluate RESULT to get return value, default nil.
The result is undefined if BODY modifies the list.

Why is make-symbol used in dolist at all? The benefit seems
infinitesimal to me, and in particular if you now suggest that we

Sure. But I currently see no reason to prefer the cl-macs.el behavior over
the subr.el one (AFAICT my suggested code is just as efficient as the
cl-macs.el one), so I'm not sure whether we should change cl-macs.el or
subr.el's behavior.

Does that really work with nested dolist calls?
It ought to; each one will refer to its own binding.
It would work with an ordinary interned symbol, too.
The only reason to use an uninterned symbol is to avoid
interfering with any possible user program.

I doubt it'll make any difference. When reading the .elc file, the symbols
will get copied anyway for the reason that they're not interned.

To modify the list that dolist is scanning is such an abuse that I am
not sure we need to specify what it should do. But if I have

No it wouldn't. With my change in the macro, compilation of a single
source file, indeed all compilation in a single Emacs session, would
use only one symbol for this.
The only missing unsolved part of this problem is how to arrange
the proper read syntax in the .elc file so that what's one symbol
at compile time will read back as one symbol.

So what about using shorter symbol names than --dolist-temp--
--dotimes-temp--, --cl-dolist-temp-- etc.
And for the "defconst-tmp-var" symbol used in byte-compile-defvar.
E.g use "*" instead of the longer name.
That'll save a few KBytes.
But to follow your suggestion, why don't we just have _one_ generic
uninterned "tmp" symbol for all such uses.
E.g.

Well, that's only true if the change in the reader only applies to dolist.
If it applies more generally, it may conflate distinct symbols used in
*other* macros.

Well, that's only true if the change in the reader only applies to dolist.
If it applies more generally, it may conflate distinct symbols used in
*other* macros.
Perhaps we are thinking of different kinds of change.
What I have in mind would only avoid splitting of one symbol
(as inserted in macro expansions) into multiple symbols
in the process of writing the compiled code into a file and reading it again.
That can't do any harm.

I don't see how. They are uninterned, after all. And "picking at
random" means that it becomes unpredictable what loop combinations
will happen to be debuggable, and what combinations will not. And it
will change from compilation to compilation. I don't like that at
all.
Frankly speaking: I don't know what we are supposed to buy ourselves
if a loop body can access its internal variable by (symbol-value
tmp-loop-var) instead of just tmp-loop-var.
It seems like a pointless exercise in obfuscation. It does not buy us
any encapsulation, and makes debugging and understanding the code
harder when disassembling it.

The proposal was to use the same uninterned symbol for all loops and
keep it in a global variable like tmp-loop-var. And that means, of
course, that everybody able to access that global variable can also
use it to access the loop variable. You don't need to go through
obarray, the symbol _is_ already available in tmp-loop-var without
lookup.

You can use symbol-value to examine an uninterned symbol.
If it uses names like `uninterned-6', and you know to find that
as (nth 6 uninterned-vars-list), you can examine it. But this is
not something user programs are likely to do by accident.
And "picking at
random" means that it becomes unpredictable what loop combinations
will happen to be debuggable, and what combinations will not.
It is not as good as if we had a feature in the debugger to do this
job 100%. Ideal would be having a feature to examine a variable in
the debugger's selected stack frame. However, that would be a lot of
work. So I proposed something that would give a little bit more
debuggability in a pinch, while being very easy to do.
It seems like a pointless exercise in obfuscation. It does not buy us
any encapsulation, and makes debugging and understanding the code
harder when disassembling it.
Maybe you are right. Lots of other internal values are exposed inside
Emacs in ways that are not quite clean; two more for dolist and
dotimes would not be much risk.
Does anyone argue against?

There may be one or two unexpected details to work out, but I think the
approach is fundamentally pretty safe.

One of the problems mentioned in this thread is that not only each uninterned
symbol used by dolist is a separate object, but that the symbol's name
(i.e. the string "--cl-dolist-temp--") is also duplicated when reading the
.elc file, which is why the length of the symbol's name makes a difference
in the amount of pure storage used. If all strings are basically
hash-consed, then this problem disappears.

I installed the patch. It works as far as I tested on multiple
platforms (though that doesn't prove that the prerequisite for sharing
is completely satisfied by the current code, of course).

Actually, I don't see how we can satisfy the prerequisite: a user
might always choose to use `aset' on an existing string. Of course,
this objection would hold equally for sharing equal strings, not just
strings with a common suffix.
Am I overlooking something? Or do we have some mechanism in place
against tampering with strings in pure space? I just tried messing up
`search-whitespace-regexp' with `aset', and was successful.
If we merge strings in pure space, should we not disallow modifying
them?

So why does
(aset search-whitespace-regexp 0 ?x)
not fail?
isearch.el is loaded from loadup.el.

Because nobody has put search-whitespace-regexp in pure space.

Loading from loadup.el does not mean putting all strings in pure space.
Only explicit calls to purecopy do that. There are only a few types
objects that are implicitly put in pure space, like byte code objects or
function bodies.

Since today I'm seeing the following warning, when I start emacs:
Warning (initialization): Building Emacs overflowed pure space.
(See the node Pure Storage in the Lisp manual for details.)
Is this a new warning for an already existing problem or is this a new
feature?
The docu says to increase PURESIZE, but I'm not sure to or by what.
Maybe it'd be better to increase BASE_PURESIZE or one of these ..._EXTRA
constants, but then again I'm not sure how much.
BTW this is a Solaris 5.8 build.

With the new value for BASE_PURESIZE (1120000 + ...) the warning is gone
for the Solaris 5.8.build. Thanks
