Hi,
I recently started to show the *Completions* buffer in a dedicated
frame:
(setq same-window-buffer-names
(remove "*Completions*" same-window-buffer-names))
(add-to-list 'special-display-buffer-names
'("*Completions*" ((height . 20))))
After clicking on an alternative with the mouse iconifies the
completions frame[1]. But the next time a completions buffer is
generated, the completions frame is not de-iconified. I think the
frame should be made visible.
I tried to put `make-frame-visible' in `completion-setup-hook' without
success and I didn't find the right place in `simple.el'. Can anyone
point me to the right direction?
Bye, Reiner.
[1] See `mouse-choose-completion'.

I don't claim this is the way to go for everyone, but you might want to look
at how I deal with this in my library `oneonone.el'. I've long had a
dedicated *Completions* frame, and there are a few twists and turns you
might want to keep in mind. Anyway, in case it helps:
Library: http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/emacs/oneonone.el.
Explanation:
http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/Help_and_Completions_Frames.
See, in particular, function 1on1-display-*Completions*-frame - it should
help with your problem.

Hmm... odd. I've used a dedicated frame "for ever" and it pops right back
up for me. And I can't seem to find any place in my .emacs where
I workaround such a problem either.

Hm, it might depend on the window manager. I use fluxbox:
$ fluxbox -version
Fluxbox 0.9.14 : (c) 2001-2005 Henrik Kinnunen
When I try with plain twm, fvwm1 or blackbox, the frame is
de-iconified. So it's probably a bug in fluxbox.
Could you point me to the relevant code in Emacs responsible for
de-iconifying the frame so that I can report to the fluxbox people?
Thanks.
Bye, Reiner.

Or could you help me to provide a simple recipe? *time passes* Okay,
here one...
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
(switch-to-buffer "*Messages*")
(setq sit 3)
(defun sleep (seconds)
(sit-for seconds)
(sleep-for seconds))
(sleep sit)
(message "Creating frame FLUXBOX-DEBUG...")
(setq f (make-frame '((name . "FLUXBOX-DEBUG") (height . 10))))
(message "Creating frame FLUXBOX-DEBUG...done")
(sleep sit)
(message "Iconifying frame FLUXBOX-DEBUG...")
(iconify-frame f)
(message "Iconifying frame FLUXBOX-DEBUG...done")
(sleep sit)
(message "Trying to make frame FLUXBOX-DEBUG visible...")
(make-frame-visible f)
(message "Trying to make frame FLUXBOX-DEBUG visible...done")
(sleep sit)
(message "If FLUXBOX-DEBUG frame is not visible (still iconified), there's a bug.")
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
I've sent it to the fluxbox list.
Bye, Reiner.

I presume it is the code in x_make_frame_visible (xterm.c).
You could try first running under GDB and making sure that that
function really is being called. It's possible that some strangeness
prevents Emacs from calling it.

The code in temp_output_buffer_show includes this:
if (!EQ (Vtemp_buffer_show_function, Qnil))
call1 (Vtemp_buffer_show_function, buf);
else
{
window = Fdisplay_buffer (buf, Qnil, Qnil);
if (!EQ (XWINDOW (window)->frame, selected_frame))
Fmake_frame_visible (WINDOW_FRAME (XWINDOW (window)));
Apparently that call to Fmake_frame_visible is not doing the job for
you. Can you determine why not?
