Why is it that

(setq a (gensym)) ;=> G2007
a                 ;=> G2007
(equal a 'G2007)  ;=> nil

while 

(setq a 'foo)    ;=> foo
a                ;=> foo
(equal a 'foo)   ;=> t

?
