Those who are interested in Windows support, please DTRT with this suggestion.
(I don't know whether the current compile.el still has the problem.)

Could you provide a patch for the latest version of compile.el
in the development version of Emacs?  (In CVS on savannah.gnu.org.)

Here's the latest compile.el, but I don't know whether it runs
in Emacs 21.
