    I do run Emacs on a light background.  "Pathetically bad" is an 
    overstatement, but some face does make me think "What the..." the first 
    time I see them.

We can change them now.  These changes won't break other things in
surprising ways.  So it is just a matter of finding a better choice of
face definitions.

That may not be easy, but at least it is doable in theory.
