What is considered "old"? 21.2 and lower? 21.1 and lower? Anything other than the next Emacs release counts as "old". Also I know a lot of effort goes into making Gnus compatible with XEmacs. Is that consistent with your views? That isn't work that the GNU Project needs, but you can do it if you like.
