Yes, but we must change read-file-name also so the information that this
is a directory open is passed down to x-file-dialog somehow.

As long as no file dialog is involved, it should work.
Those two statements seem mutually contradictory.
The first says that Dired would use a file dialog,
and the second says that it won't.
