I was thinking that maybe it's a good idea to use the transient transient-mark-mode in this case, so that marking with the mouse always behaves like transient-mark-mode. That is an interesting idea. Could you install it with a variable to control it, so that people could try it out, and we could decide later on whether to make this change the default?
