can't do occurs in the occur buffer

Try doing an "occur" when in an occur buffer. Nada, zilch.  Why, of
course, like grep x y > y, you can't have your cake and eat it to, you
say.  Well, one could if you made it doable... while there, add a "q"
to quit out of the occur buffer.
