Then one can use stow to install the package, remove the symlinks it created. And remove the whole package with a simple rm. One can also extened automake to support installing an .depend file that lists possible dependecies. Programs can then use this to calculate if the program will work or not. And on GNU/Hurd a package translator could read this file and "install" them in /. Enough rambling for one day. ;)
