Can anyone give me any pointers on how to debug / solve this problem? I am
    at a loss.

See what shell command was run, and run it manually under GDB with a
breakpoint at Fsignal. You can then make a C backtrace
or use xbacktrace to make a Lisp backtrace.

Does that help?
