As you can see, foreground and background are set to the same colour, thus preventing the possibility of anything different from a coloured space. It is certainly strange, but whether it is a bug, I do not know. I wish gamegrid.el had more comments. Maybe I should directly ask the author, Glynn Clements, if no one here cares about gamegrid. Please do try to contact him. If you can get explanations for this and other things in gamegrid.el, you could write more comments. I will also write to him asking him to add comments.
