This part of the doc string makes no sense and should be removed:

 "(but we recommend using `apropos-variable' instead)"

1. `apropos-variable' cannot be used to customize options.

2. "We recommend" is not appropriate language here - who is
   "we"?.  Explain the pros and cons or say nothing about it.
