What means do you use to determine whether a particular or any font
exists on your system? If you can determine that it has at least one
font, could you pass it to GNU Emacs as argument of the -fn switch?
With set-frame-font in .emacs you can record that, or use a way like
this:
(setq initial-frame-alist '(
(font . "-*-*-medium-r-normal--10-*-*-*-*-*-fontset-
osaka")))
(setq default-frame-alist '(
(background-color . "ghost white")
(foreground-color . "grey10")
(cursor-color . "purple")
(cursor-type . box)
(vertical-scroll-bars . left)
(active-alpha . 0.875)
(inactive-alpha . 0.75)
(font . "-*-*-medium-r-normal--9-*-*-*-*-*-fontset-
hiraginokaku")
(top . 20) (left . 150) (width . 89) (height . 56)))

When in doubt, use brute force.
