Ludwig, you could always sidestep the issue by deleting any stale
"server" file on startup.
For example, create a shortcut in your Start Menu\Startup folder, with target:

cmd.exe /c "del %APPDATA%\.emacs.d\server\server"

(To get to the Startup folder on Windows 8 you can type
"shell:startup" in the Run box.)
