This is true, but I don't see how it addresses my question (and I'm not quite sure what "toggles it right from the spot" means). I asked about the line:
in the source. Should it be removed? Or uncommented? For me, adding it to my global Emacs configuration works fine, suggesting it can indeed be uncommented, so that when flymake-mode is turned on, it is activated automatically in new buffers. Also, currently there seems to be no way of customizing flymake-mode to be on from startup, which itself would seem to require a new customization.
