on latest Emacs 25, ansi colors not working in shell-mode

Greetings,

Please forgive me if I am missing something obvious here. I recently
installed Emacs 25 on two different Ubuntu 15.04 boxes. One one, I compiled
from source using the emacs-mirror repository on Github (
https://github.com/emacs-mirror/emacs ). On the other, I installed using
the "Ubuntu Emacs Lisp" repository here (
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-elisp/+archive/ubuntu/ppa ). In both cases,
doing M-x shell does not show any colors. For example, folders used to be
blue and files with execute permission used to be green. I thought it may
be an issues with my .emacs file, but emacs -q does not change anything. I
have checked ansi-color-for-comint-mode-on, but nothing seems to affect
this. Trying different themes also has no effect.

Is there something obvious I am missing?
