Would it help if define-minor-mode recorded what the variable/expression is (e.g., by putting a property on the function symbol)? This could also be useful for define-globalized-minor-mode (see Bug#29081 - for which the current suggestion is to do without that, but if such a thing has two uses, it will likely be helpful in even more situations).
