Today I installed a later version of Org via the package installer. Afterwards, in a *Help* buffer I saw the following:

org is an available obsolete package.

Status: Available Obsolete from gnu -- Install
    Archive: gnu

    Version: 20170814
Summary: Outline-based notes management and organizer
Other versions: 20170814 (installed), builtin.

[back]

what is meant by "obsolete package" in this case?

My Emacs is:

GNU Emacs 25.1.1 (x86_64-apple-darwin13.4.0, NS appkit-1265.21 Version 10.9.5 (Build 13F1911)) of 2016-09-20

This probably means you are using the gnu org-mode package. I think you
want to use the package directly from org mode archive:
http://orgmode.org/elpa. I do this by adding the archive to
package-archives (via customize I add ("org" . "http://orgmode.org/elpa/")
) and then include org mode in my init.el using:

(use-package org-plus-contrib
  :pin org
  :demand t)
