This sounds like a holy war and not a technical argument about the patch.

As far as I can tell, most of the 'ns-' variables only work on OS X
and their documentation only references versions of OS X and not
versions of GNUstep. GNUstep clearly is trying to mimic OS X on this
API, so if the attribute masks don't work, that's an error in GNUstep,
rather than something Emacs shouldn't do.
