I have found the cause of this problem. The following line in my init file which I have now disabled:

(add-to-list 'default-frame-alist '(font-backend xfthb))

This line affects font display in Emacs 27.1 but not 26.3.

OK, so I hope someone will be able to reproduce this problem under
those conditions, because I cannot.
