OK, so I tried this:
0. mkdir /tmp/emacs-bug
1. mv test.tex .emacs .emacs.desktop /tmp/emacs-bug
2. cd /tmp/emacs-bug
3. HOME=`pwd` emacs
4. M-x package-install RET
5. [Install auctex]
6. C-x C-f test.tex RET
7. <up>
And I see no crash. Are the above steps all that is needed?
