On macOS, with configure called e.g. as

./configure  '--without-xml2' '--with-modules' '--without-pop'
'--with-mailutils' --enable-check-lisp-object-type 'CFLAGS=-O2 -save-temps'
'MAKEINFO=/usr/local/opt/texinfo/bin/makeinfo'
