this is on mac os x 10.5. gnu emacs from cvs.

two problems:

there seem to be problems during configure and make stages. during configure, the image libraries that are found and used by emacs-22.2 are not recognized:

./configure --enable-carbon-app --without-x --with-carbon

leads to

What compiler should emacs be built with? gcc -g -O2 -Wno-pointer-sign
Should Emacs use the GNU version of malloc? no
(The GNU allocators don't work with this system configuration.)
Should Emacs use a relocating allocator for buffers? no
Should Emacs use mmap(2) for buffer allocation? no
What window system should Emacs use? mac
What toolkit should Emacs use? none
Where do we find X Windows header files? NONE
Where do we find X Windows libraries? NONE
  Does Emacs use -lXaw3d? no
  Does Emacs use -lXpm? no
  Does Emacs use -ljpeg? no
  Does Emacs use -ltiff? no
Does Emacs use a gif library? no
  Does Emacs use -lpng? no
  Does Emacs use -lrsvg-2? no
  Does Emacs use -lgpm? no
  Does Emacs use -ldbus? no
Does Emacs use X toolkit scroll bars? yes

and then during the compile stage:

gcc -c -fpascal-strings -DMAC_OSX -Demacs -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I/usr/local/emacs/src -fpascal-strings -DMAC_OSX -Dtemacs -g -O2 -Wno-pointer-sign -I/opt/local/include/freetype2 -I/opt/local/include -I/opt/local/include xdisp.c
xdisp.c: In function 'calc_pixel_width_or_height':
xdisp.c:18864: error: 'struct font' has no member named 'max_bounds'
xdisp.c: In function 'fill_composite_glyph_string':
xdisp.c:19295: warning: assignment from incompatible pointer type
xdisp.c: In function 'fill_glyph_string':
xdisp.c:19367: warning: assignment from incompatible pointer type
xdisp.c: In function 'produce_stretch_glyph':
xdisp.c:20425: warning: pointer type mismatch in conditional expression
xdisp.c: In function 'calc_line_height_property':
xdisp.c:20590: warning: assignment from incompatible pointer type
xdisp.c: In function 'x_produce_glyphs':
xdisp.c:20696: warning: assignment from incompatible pointer type
xdisp.c:20739: error: 'struct font' has no member named 'max_bounds'
xdisp.c:21115: error: 'struct font' has no member named 'max_bounds'
make[2]: *** [xdisp.o] Error 1
make[1]: *** [bootstrap-build] Error 2
make: *** [bootstrap] Error 2

and previously there were similar problems in xfaces.c (I think)
