With ls, -F gives you file classifiers like dir(/), exe(*), backup(~), etc. Dired gives you some of these. If yer term is set up for it, dirs will be colored, the same as ls. Backup and autosaved files are indicated in the conventional manner (#, ~). Excecutables require you seeing permissions. Not sure what you mean by "rights". You can also enter dired directly when invoking emacs from command line by adding dir. example: emacs / emacs . nb
