Well at the time they were setting the standard. Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, Carmack & Abrash showed it was possible to do this on a PC. Rest followed. We can argue now that FPS like Doom/Quake are not so creative in it's game play, but then there were not so many such game. When HL2 came up with destructible things and barrels one could throw around it was a revolution, now probably even shi***st games can do solid body physics.
