This bug report will be sent to the Free Software Foundation,
not to your local site managers!
Please write in English, because the Emacs maintainers do not have
translators to read other languages for them.

Your bug report will be posted to the bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org mailing list,
and to the gnu.emacs.bug news group.

In GNU Emacs 21.2.1 (sparc-sun-solaris2.6, X toolkit)
 of 2002-07-11 on albany
configured using `configure --libexecdir=/usr/local/lib'
Important settings:
  value of $LC_ALL: nil
  value of $LC_COLLATE: en_GB.ISO8859-15
  value of $LC_CTYPE: en_GB.ISO8859-15
  value of $LC_MESSAGES: C
  value of $LC_MONETARY: en_GB.ISO8859-15
  value of $LC_NUMERIC: en_GB.ISO8859-15
  value of $LC_TIME: en_GB.ISO8859-15
  value of $LANG: en_GB.ISO8859-15
  locale-coding-system: iso-latin-9
  default-enable-multibyte-characters: nil

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

(make-frame-on-display "phenakite:0.0")
returns
x-create-frame-with-faces: X protocol error: BadAtom (invalid Atom parameter) on protocol request 18 [3 times]

make-frame-on-display works successfully on our previous Emacs versions: 20.7, 20.3 and 19.29.

Thanks
Andrew

I have narrowed this down to only being a problem when the executable is
run from a Solaris 8 box. The executable was build on Solaris 2.6. I also
do not have a problem with make-frame-on-display when I am running the
eecutable from
a Solaris 7 machine. So it seems to be an OS issue rather than a GNU Emacs
bug.
However, if have any additional information on the likely cause or perhaps
an
OS patch for Solaris 8 then please let me know.

Thanks
Andrew Maguire

If you build Emacs on Solaris 8, does it work ok on Solaris 8?

I have just tried building emacs on Solaris 8 (we are using gcc 2.7.2.3)
but I get the same problem. Note that if I try make-frame-on-display
on a UNIX type machine I get a BadWindow error (code 3).
I get a BadAtom error (code 18) when I try to connect to Exceed 6.1 on a
Windows NT machine.

I have just tried out Solaris 9 and I have the smae problems as with Solaris
8.

Do I understand correctly that the problem happens even without Exceed
being used, i.e. if you run the X version of Emacs on a Unix box?

If so, please tell what toolkit did you build Emacs with. Also, does the
technique outlined in etc/DEBUG (search for "If you encounter X protocol
errors") help to investigate this probelem?

It sounds like you are now saying that no Emacs executable you can
construct works properly on Solaris 8, and the same for Solaris 9.

Is this correct?

If that is the case, I don't know how we can debug it. Only a Solaris
and X wizard can debug it.

Thanks I will try this out.
