Yes, for the NS port only of course.  I don’t know if there are such problems in other ports.
I cursorily checked the windows port and didn’t see any use of the variable.

Yes, I asked precisely because it is a wider-ranging change that I thought and think is, in principle, the right fix.

Anyway, I have committed a change for nsfns.m.

This should be fixed.  Thanks, Konrad, for reporting this.
