Reasonably hard. That's what I tried to do first, and it's not nearly as easy. I also wrote a patch in which Emacs fully-buffers stderr but calls 'fflush_unlocked (stderr)' at strategic spots. That will also work and is reasonably easy to do, but it's a more-intrusive patch.
