emacs 21.3 with X support?

dear readers,

i've compiled gnu emacs 21.3 under linux redhat 8.0 with the following 
configuration:

./configure --with-x --x-libraries=/usr/X11R6/include/X11/ 
--x-includes=/usr/X11R6/lib/
</.configure>

i would like to run emacs in X windows, but it always launches in 
terminal mode. here's a snippit of the verbose:

The libraries are most probably in /usr/X11/R6/lib, whereas the
includes are in /usr/X11R6/include.

Your config is different in two ways:  (1) You had it the other way
round, and (2) you specified /usr/X11R6/include/X11, instead of
/usr/X11R6/include.

I suggest that you do not specify these parameters at all.
/usr/X11R6 seems like a normal place for X11 to be installed, so I
expect that the Emacs configure script knows about it and checks it.

This is your problem: the configure script concluded that it cannot
build Emacs with X support on this machine.

The way to find out why is to look at the file config.log, and find
the test that failed and caused the script to arrive at that
conclusion.  Can you find that test and post here the details of its
failure?

The "cached" means that it remembered this option.  Remove
config.cache to make it forget.  Then maybe another configure run
will help.

This means it couldn't find your X include files.  Where are they on
that system?

And this says that the X toolkit library, libXt.so, could not be
found.  Where do you have that on your machine?

Well, I can see that it looked but couldn't find it.  But as I
already mentioned in another reply, you swapped the locations for the
libraries and for the include files.

If all of this doesn't help, you may have to install additional
packages.  For example, there are often *-dev or *-devel packages
that contain the header files.

But your configure run indicates that it couldn't even find the X11
library libXt, and without that library, X11 pretty much won't run.
So that is an indicator that configure was looking in the wrong place.
