Maybe customisation could be introduced there. I know from trying that that I dislike it though, maybe simply because I'm accustomed to having the nice instant visual feedback of the highlighted region rather than having to remember where the mark is and imagine it. I use C-SPC and cursor keys and C-SPC and C-s blah RET a lot (yes I know that C-s RET can push a mark anyway, but then you need to C-x C-x (C-x C-x...) _after_ the search and don't get the nice highlighting of the region during the search, ho hum).
