Ah, then Skip's looking-at is a fine solution:

(looking-at-p "\\([[:blank:]]+\\)?\\(\n\\|\\'\\)")

That's as a test. Or you could use a single `replace-regexp' invocation,
to detect and replace the whitespace in one go.
