If you feel that you should not cater for such packages, please do. It is not possible to follow every Emacs package and check if cute changes (to Emacs CVS trunk) of the day break it -- it's just too many of them. I welcome this change, because it's good on all points. As a WL user, I don't care if the icons don't show as I don't use them anyway (but the majority of users probably do). I am not arguing that the new behaviour is bad or radical -- I just warn you that it doesn't work in all cases. It's up to you to decide whether to push it at a point release.
