Hi all

I just compiled a rather recent Emacs snapshot and noticed that,
sadly, it still had the problem that made me stop using it two months
ago. I have looked over the net for something like this but have
found nothing.

On my computer, Emacs 22 has a strange scrolling bug which make
scrolling a document down quite painful and jerky. In slow motion,
it's like emacs overestimates the amount by which it needs to scroll.
After scrolling, the caret is pushed back two lines away. This
doesn't happen when scrolling up, with the caret on top of the window.

I have scroll-step and scroll-conservatively set to 1 and 100..00
respectively. I've tried setting them to various values and it
changed nothing so I'm thinking I'm not looking at the right place.

Am I the only one having that problem and is there any solution?

F-D

I reported this as a bug some months ago (last year?). Months later
RMS sent me an eMail that this hard to find bug was eliminated. (I
found it when 'make install' was executing. Lines scroll smoothly
until mouse.el* are installed. Then the CPU gets a lot to do and no
text is output. After some time text is output again and the cursor
jumps back, or such.)

How *recent* is your source code for GNU Emacs 22.0.50? How did you
get it? When does that error occur for you? In which buffer and mode?
Does it also occur when you launch GNU Emacs with -Q, i.e. no
customisation at all? (It might help and accelerate to write a
little .emacs-init.el file with particular key bindings or other
things you cannot forego, taken from your .emacs file, and invoke GNU
Emacs as 'emacs -Q -l ~/.emacs-init.el &')

The Ubuntu 2006-09-15 snapshot had that problem, but I just realized
this morning I had only partially updated my emacs packages to the
last Debian source. I fixed my mistake and it seems that the current
Debian snapshot, 2006-10-22, doesn't have that problem. Big yay!

Thank you for answering!
