AFAIK the patches were (are?) necessary for fixing the autoconf build.
My recipe directly compiles mps.c with no autoconf/make involved.
So maybe the patches are still required to build MPS with the autoconf
scripts. However, I don't see the point of doing that, since directly
compiling mps.c is less troublesome and is what the MPS documentation
implicitly encourages.
