It's just a lot of work for very little benefit: people have lived with this problem for a while now and haven't found the workarounds to be serious (basically: don't use utf-8 for those files and don't use unify-8859-on-decoding if you manipulate such files). Such a "feature" would only be an ugly workaround anyway. As for a real fix: fixing it is what emacs-unicode is all about. Stefan
