Hi list,

I have a simple question that might lack a simple answer.

I use Debian wheezy, and I rely heavily on the packages on the emacs lisp that
is shipped with Debian in various packages. Is there a way I can upgrade to
emacs24 while using the packaged elisp? Getting the elisp packages from
ELPA/MELPA/Marmalade or similar is not that ideal since many (most?) of them are
not present.

Thanks,
Francesco

Has anyone figured out how to install elpa, melpa, or marmallade on debian
wheezy yet?

There is current discussion of this issue in the debian-backports
mailing list. Ignore the first response which was due to a
misunderstanding of the question. The rest is ongoing.

  http://lists.debian.org/debian-backports/2013/04/threads.html#00010

If you must have the bleeding edge then perhaps Unstable is the better
track for you. It is not without problems. It is the bleeding edge
after all. And it is hard to have a bleeding edge without spilling a
little blood. The whole point of stable releases is to avoid that but
of course that means you don't get the daily newest between releases.

Options:

1. Try http://emacswiki.org/emacs/ELPA#toc6 to configure packages if you
wish to stay with the Emacs23 available in Wheezy, without either
   apt-pinning or adding outside repos.

2. Pin ahead to one of the Emacs24 packages for Sid (
   http://packages.debian.org/search?suite=all&searchon=names&keywords=emacs24
   ).

3. Try one of the Emacs24 packages from http://emacs.naquadah.org/.

Good luck!

Best,
Will

In the end I installed emacs24 through the emacs-snapshot package, and things
seem to be fine: the debian packages work with the new emacs.

I have however a very annoying problem with ERC: I have enabled the
‘scrollbottom’ module enabled but the text ‘jumps’ to the middle of the frame
every time a new message arrived. Did anybody record a behaviour like this, and
if yes, how do I fix it?

Thanks,
Francesco

I think I saw something like that when I switched to Emacs 24. I do my
scrolling settings with the code below. It's likely what you'd want too.

    (add-hook 'erc-mode-hook 'my-erc-mode-hook)

    (defun my-erc-mode-hook ()
      (set (make-local-variable 'scroll-conservatively) 101)
      (set (make-local-variable 'scroll-step) 1))

Much better, thanks!

Nice to hear. I forgot to tell that I don't use scrollbottom module at
all.

Hi,

I have another ERC & emacs24 issue: the reconnect doesn’t seem to work anymore.
I have

    (setq erc-server-reconnect-timeout 10)

in my init file, is something else necessary? I’m also connecting via ssl.

Francesco

These work perfectly with Debian and ELPA too. I use them with ELPA and
my emacs configuration has become a LOT easier.
