I have hardly received any build reports for the 24.2 release candidate.
If you're reading this, please help with the testing; after building,
send me an email reporting success/failure on your platform, and please
try to give the 24.2 RC as much testing as you can over the weekend.
Thanks.

Not a bug report, but a "Fehlanzeige" (as we would say in German).

Gentoo has app-editors/emacs-24.2_rc1 in testing since Wednesday
(the day it was released). No bug reports from our users so far.

Build ok, after 15s of use:

Debugger entered--Lisp error: (void-function internal--before-with-selected-window)

It seems to work fine for me on a MS-Windows box.

And FWIW, if anyone wants to test this RC on MS-Windows, I've uploaded
my binaries here:

I got a report of a possible regression. It's on an unusual setup
(Ubuntu running on VMware), and I can't reproduce the problem on my
(non-VM) machine. It doesn't seem like a show-stopper, but if anyone
has a similar setup, please try to reproduce it and report back.
Thanks.

Confirmed. This is Kubuntu 12.04 64 bits (a real machine, no VMWare):

Welcome to the Emacs shell

~/em-24.2/bin $ cd
usage: cd: (DIR)
~/em-24.2/bin $ exit
exit: command not found
~/em-24.2/bin $ ls
ctags emacs emacsclient grep-changelog
ebrowse emacs-24.2 etags rcs-checkin
~/em-24.2/bin $ which ls
~/em-24.2/bin $ /bin/ls

(note the weird output of `which ls', pointing to /bin/ls instead of the
built-in Lisp implementation and precedeing the text by the eshell
prompt.)

Steps to reproduce:

tar xzf emacs-24.2-rc1.tar.gz
cd emacs-24.2
./configure --prefix=/home/oscar/em-24.2
make -j4
make install
cd ~/em-24.2/bin
emacs -Q
M-x eshell

It compiles and run fine under ArchLinux:

  GNU Emacs 24.2.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.24.10) of
  2012-08-18 on myhost.

I still can't reproduce the problem. I'm also on Ubuntu 12.04.

Can you confirm that the 24.1 tarball does not have this problem? If
so, could you try bisecting using the emacs-24 branch? There are only
~80 revisions between 24.1 and 24.2, so it should not be difficult to
find the problem if it's reproducible.

Okay, I'll try to allocate some time later today.

I've reproduced the problem on Ubuntu 12.04 x86,
on an older machine where it's a pain to build.
I'll try to bisect and will let you know
if I can. The machine is so slow that it may be
a while....

I have also reproduced the problem on my platform
(Ubuntu 12.04 x86 AMD, 32-bit) with Emacs 24.1
and with Emacs 23.4 (the latter needed some tweaking
to compile, as it doesn't build out of the box).
So it is not a regression.

Yep, same here with the git sources tagged as emacs-24.1, on Kubuntu
x86_64.

This seems to be dependent on the given prefix name. $HOME/em-24.2
shows the problem, but $HOME/ema-24.2 does not.

The relevant part would be the regular expression below:

(defun eshell-find-alias-function (name)
"Check whether a function called `eshell/NAME' exists."
(let* ((sym (intern-soft (concat "eshell/" name)))
	 (file (symbol-file sym 'defun)))
;; If the function exists, but is defined in an eshell module
;; that's not currently enabled, don't report it as found
    (if (and file
	     (string-match "\\(em\\|esh\\)-\\(.*\\)\\(\\.el\\)?\\'" file))
	(let ((module-sym
	       (intern (file-name-sans-extension
			(file-name-nondirectory
			 (concat "eshell-" (match-string 2 file)))))))
	  (if (and (functionp sym)
		   (or (null module-sym)
		       (eshell-using-module module-sym)
		       (memq module-sym (eshell-subgroups 'eshell))))
	      sym))
;; Otherwise, if it's bound, return it.
      (if (functionp sym)
	  sym))))

Maybe we can use \\([^/\n]*\\) (or include more separators for DOS or
Windows?) instead of \\(.*\\) .

I've built and ran Emacs 24.2-rc on my openSuSE/Tumbleweed box and so
far things run smoothly.
