It doesn't change the behaviour for me. I still get
idle: 0
idle: 4
idle: 9
idle: 0
idle: 5
idle: 10
idle: 15
idle: 20
idle: 25
idle: 30
idle: 35
Have checked your code snippet by starting plain "emacs -Q"?
