I'm confused as to what your trying to achieve other than
re-implementing occur-mode with an external step?

You may want to look at helm (helm-occur, helm-swoop etc). If none of
the existing helm-* functions do what you need it's built to make it
fairly easy to navigate and narrow any list of stuff.
