Eval this:

(defun test-fun ()
  "`equal' isn't the same as `='. `+' doesn't work either." )

Then do

  C-h f test-fun RET

and observe that while `equal' is a button, neither of `=' or
`+' is.

It is the same from C, see for example

  C-h f eql RET

where `eq' and `eql' are buttonized, `=' isn't.

eql is defined in src/fns.c

It is the same in ERC BTW, `=' isn't buttonized. Maybe some
regexp somewhere where functions that contain non-alphanums
aren't buttonized?

E.g., `string=' isn't buttonized, but `string-equal' is ...

This is true of Emacs 27 but in Emacs 28 `=' and `+' are buttonized in
*Help*.

Not here which is

  GNU Emacs 28.0.50 (build 3, x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, cairo
  version 1.16.0) of 2021-08-02

Please use

  C-u M-x emacs-version RET

Yeah ... where/how did you get 28.1?

I did what I usually do and got same old 28.0.50.
