I wonder if the newline symbol (↵) would be a more appropriate default. A hard newline in a longlines buffer only sometimes represents a paragraph break, and the paragraph symbol is a more complex glyph that makes the buffer look cluttered and hard to read when there are a lot of hard newlines.
