Indentation flaky and currently broken in 24.4

The auto indentation in HTML and Javascript mode has suddenly become broke, with lines previously properly indented, being reset to column 0 after a line return and the <TAB> key no longer functional.  Indentation was work, then stopped working, then started working again and now stopped working. I've tried restarting emacs and reverting to a previous buffer to no avail. Any clues/suggestions would be appreciated!

i can't reproduce this on 24.4 (manually compiled for Debian 7.8 
x86_64). Could you please provide a minimal example, starting from 
`emacs -Q', of the texts for `html-mode' and `javascript-mode' 
that consistently demonstrate the behaviour you describe?
