Sniff, I'm only one character away from what I want, but apparently I
must type (or ESC /) the whole thing over to be able to adjust it.

Dired's "!" puts the current hint, if any, into the ESC P list. why
not man?  (In the above story, we want to see the apt_preferences(5)
man page.)

RMS> Use M-n to pull in the default value.

very funny. doesn't work with the emacs version in my headers above [21.2].
furthermore, M-p gets the default in dired, say using ! on a .gz
entry.  Therefore M-n here, M-p there ... schizophrenia
