In fact, I have once experimented with this. Its main problem is that the data structure would get corrupted in certain cases, especially when yanking text or when some Lisp function is using `insert'. One way to deal with that, would be to let font-lock automatically fix it. But this seems ugly. More importantly, I understand that Richard is strongly opposed to any such kind of data structure. So this wouldn't make any difference. If a tree-like data structure is o.k., then---given the sensibility of maintaining the integrity of said data structure---I, as a user, would very much prefer some solution at the C-level. At least in the long run. But actually, the specific internal representation is a secondary issue. The general architecture and the UI is much more important and I don't see any room for agreement there.
