Personal gift - INR 10,0000 - to new contributors
(INR => Indian Rupees)
I have been harboring this idea for a while (> 5 years) and this is the
first time I am making an announcement on the public list.
Rough guidelines are:
1. Individuals only.
2. Open only to first time contributors.
3. Self-contained task that improve specific aspects of Emacs
(Preferably, the C parts) .
Stefan or Eli frequently mention what aspects they would like to see
improved. Here is one such feature:
4. I will hand over the gift only after the feature has been accepted in
to the trunk.
This announcement is a personal initiative. i.e., I haven't consulted
or informed the Emacs developers or maintainers while making this
announcement. They may or may not approve of it.
I will NOT involve myself in:
1. The feature that is picked
2. The technical aspects of the work in any way.
If you want to claim the gift, you can point me to
1. The specific feature that is implemented.
2. The quantum of code as it hits the trunk.

Here is one such feature:
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2012-08/msg00308.html
If others know of some features please feel free to add to the list.
Please note that I will consider ANY feature that would improve Emacs in
useful ways. (i.e., I have no personal agenda or a specific area of
interest)

Is it common to place the comma at 10^4n when typing INR amounts?

No. we divide into thousand, lakh(100K), crore(10M).
1,000 - One thousand (ofcourse)
10,000 - Ten Thousand
1,00,000 - 1 lakh (100 thousand)
1,00,00,000 - 1 crore (10 million) (from here on only crores)
1,00,00,00,000 - 100 crore (1 billion)
For eg: 7,020,402,000, we split that into 7,02,04,02,000 and say "Seven hundred two
crore four lakh two thousand".
When I saw Jumbunathan's figure I thought its a typo.
Thanks.,

Sorry folks. I made a typo. I am not really that rich. It's
Rs. 10,000 (Ten Thousand).

I made a mistake. I have reposted with the correct figure here.
http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.devel/170713
Could you please update the reddit post.
The original figure, I proposed is a really very big amount. I am not
really that rich. Sorry for the confusion.

That's OK. I posted a correction.
Thanks for spreading the word though. I would be very happy if someone
claims the (meagre) amount.

Cool, it's similar to the kickstarter idea:
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.devel/149738
I'm interested to see how it plays out. Bounties for implementing
emacs features could be a useful addition to emacs development.
E.g. people could donate for specific features and the money
pool could be collected when the patch is accepted in the trunk
It could motivate more people to work on emacs features and
it could also motivate them to implement them sooner rather
than later, so it would speed up emacs development.

That's sort of a small-scale Ponzi scheme kept running by keeping money
in the system. They pay out 1% of project pool funds per commit, retain
small payouts and return them into the "project pool" after a while.
So except for large payments and/or few main contributors of fast-moving
projects with lots of commits, a large part of the contributions stays
stuck in the system. In particular, it is no incentive for
new/occasional contributors as they never receive a payout unless the
system is inundanted with donations.
